Research and development activities sponsored by federal or non-federal agencies and organizations. Research and development activities sponsored by for-profit entities, except for industry/commercially-sponsored clinical trials. Examples include basic or applied research projects. Sponsors include NIH, NSF, DOE, DoD, etc.
The full federal research rate is applicable to federally funded clinical trials, whether the funds are awarded directly from the sponsor or flow through an intermediary sponsor. Examples: Investigator-initiated Extended Clinical Trial, Exploratory Clinical Trials, Multi-Site Trials.
Specific instructional or training activity established by an award. Non-research related instruction including conferences & workshops, where primary purpose is training & development of UW students and/or personnel.
Activities through which a student may earn credit toward a postsecondary degree or certificate granted by the university. Also includes preparatory/remedial instruction even though these courses may not carry degree credit.
Programs and projects which involve the performance of work other than instruction and organized research. All non-credit instruction (except preparatory/remedial instruction) and for activities that are established primarily to provide services beneficial to individuals and groups external to the institution. These activities include community service programs (including non-credit instructional activities) and cooperative extension services. Included in this category are conferences, institutes, general advisory services, reference bureaus, radio and television, consulting, and similar services to particular sectors of the community. These activities are often referred to as other sponsored activities.
Examples include: outreach education, community service, cooperative extension service, and public broadcasting.
All industry/commercially-sponsored clinical trials regardless of the phase.
Examples include pharmaceutical companies.
The state rate (depending on agency) should only be used when the State Agency has already received the funding (i.e., Block Grant) and is passing a portion of the existing funding on to the University. When UW-Madison’s proposal is part of the agency’s application to another sponsor, use the full University rate appropriate for the activity.
Examples include Wisconsin State Agencies, Counties, Dane County, Madison School Districts, and local municipalities.
